Lessons I have learned about Django, teaching, learning, and perseverance in 5 years as a Django instructor.
As a sort of follow up to the talk I gave at DjangoCon Europe 2016 about my own mid-career pivot, this talk will share what I've learned instructing several hundred other career switchers in Django. Topics will include:
- Aspects of Django that make it accessible for learners
- Aspects of Django that are difficult for learners
- How the support of the Django community aids in learning
- How adults learn, what gets in their way, and how to help
- Identifying and reinforcing essential skills
- Teaching cross-culturally
- Teaching all the other elements of software development, beyond the code (working in teams, giving and receiving feedback, critical thinking, preparation for the workforce, and more)
- Why it's the best, most rewarding job I've ever had
