Paying Attention with Python
10-17, 10:00–11:00 (Europe/Lisbon), Auditorium

Dijkstra said programming was, "a practical exercise in the effective exploitation of one’s powers of abstraction". Such powers of abstraction depend on what, why and how we pay attention to the world. My talk will be a thought provoking, creative and (hopefully) entertaining exploration of how we use (and misuse) Python to express ourselves.

To what we pay attention is important. How we pay attention is equally consequential but often unconscious. Considering why we pay attention is perhaps most significant ~ an engaging, poignant and sadly neglected opportunity for self-examination.

Why is this important?

With a world full of code of questionable quality and purpose, someone, somewhere thought such software was a good idea. Let's reflect upon what happens as we engage, disengage, or even mis-engage with the world through Python code. With the help of practical, creative and humorous examples, this talk will explore the many ways in which we may pay attention to our world through Python. In the world of programming, it turns out that paying attention to "paying attention" is worthy of paying attention.
